MotoGP Phillip Island: 'Crazy' race aids Lorenzo title bid

Reigning MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo saw his chances of retaining the number one plate recieve a boost at Phillip Island after series leader Marc Marquez was disqualified from what the Yamaha man described as a crazy race.

Lorenzo picked up the win and 25 point to close down his gap to Repsol Honda's Marquez to 18 points with 50 left on the table at Motegi next weekend and the Valencia season finale in three weeks' time.

"It was a crazy, chaotic race. The track was very quick, close to the pole position times, and Marc and Dani were very fast so I couldn't open the gap I wanted, just three or four tenths, then I almost crash in one corner in first gear so Marc was on my wheel again," said Lorenzo.

Mandatory pitstops were applied during the race as Bridgestone couldn't produce tyres that would last the distance. Marquez failed to pit at the alloted time and was black-flagged but only after a collision with Lorenzo as he exited pitlane.

"After we change bike, we appear at the same moment as Marc in the first corner, I brake too late and was out of the line and I think he enter too fast so it was impossible to avoid a collision. We both have the fault for this collision, fortunately no one crashed but it could have been worse. I was too open but he didn't look. I think race direction were a little slow to show Marc the black flag because we could be injured but luckily everyone is ok.

"Now the championship change so much because before the race we almost didn't have options, maybe three percent, now we have 20-30 per cent but Marc is very competitive in all the tracks and of he keeps even in second or third place he can win the championship. We have to try to win at Motegi and Valencia but that is a lot of laps and everything can happen."
