Izan Guevara and his GasGas Aspar team were both crowned Moto3 Champions on Sunday after a thrilling Phillip Island clash.
While the mathematical permutations for Guevara’s success did the rounds, the Spaniard would accept nothing less than the top step after a dramatic and race long battle around the Australian circuit.
“It's an incredible feeling,” Guevara said on the achievement. “I am world champion after a fantastic race and an amazing season. I have been pushing as hard as I can during the race and in the end the dream has come true. I want to thank the team for all their support, my family and all my friends.
“From the beginning of the year, I thought this could be a positive season. I didn't imagine being at this level, but I was confident that I would be in the fight for the title until the end, until the race in Valencia. However, when I definitely thought that it was possible was in Aragon. After the Motorland race, the World Championship was within our reach and we all said: "it's time to go for the title". From then, we were able to keep the gap on my rivals and everything became easier.”
With teammate Sergio Garcia collecting third position on the PI podium and sitting second in the championship standings after the pair battled across the season, Aspar picked up the Team’s World Championship trophy two races early, to the delight of team owner Jorge Martínez ‘Aspar’.
“This Teams’ World Championship title is a recognition of the great job we have done this season, but also in the previous two, when we twice were the runner-ups,” the MotoGP Legend confirmed. “In 2022 we have had a very strong and balanced team and proof of this is that we have got the title three races in advance.
“When the lights go out, the rider is on his own, in front of the rest of his rivals, but without the work of the entire team it would not be possible to constantly fight for victories.
"Izan Guevara and Sergio García have given us great moments and many podium and now we have to celebrate it.”
"Without them, this would not have been possible,” Guevara said of his squad. “At the end, we are all a team and that is our main strength. We have been an amazing group this year, we have kept together and this title is the reward for all the hard work put by the whole team during the season.
“The next step will be to take the leap into Moto2, but now I want to focus on enjoying this Moto3 title and next year we will be at our best in the intermediate category.”
