MotoGP Qatar I: Canet from Roberts in Moto2 FP3 as Lowes stays top overall

Aron Canet was the man in charge as Moto2 FP3 concluded at Qatar this afternoon, holding off Joe Roberts and Fabio Di Giannantonio to take the practice with a 2’00.335.

The hotter temperatures saw no change, however, to the overall standings with Britain’s Sam Lowes and Jake Dixon securing promotion to Q2 , in first and ninth respectively, thanks to Friday night’s efforts.

A dramatic start to Moto2 FP3 saw Bo Bendsneyder spin out at the first corner before Dixon took a trip through the gravel at turn seven on his first flying lap, both seemingly unhurt.

Quickly up to speed, Lowes returned to his leading position on his first attempt, before repeatedly improving his pace as the session evolved. Marco Bezzecchi, Remy Gardner and Nicolò Bulega looking to challenge the Brit in the early stages.

With five laps down, Marcel Schrotter joined the fight at the front, securing second from the Australian but Lowes was still the man to beat as he entered the garage. The current pace almost two-seconds adrift of Friday’s flyers with 1’59.844 the benchmark for Q2 access.

The closing 10 minutes saw Dixon finally return to the track after his early off, circulating on the edge of 2’02 pace with Cameron Beaubier and teammate Xavi Vierge for company in the hot conditions. Barry Baltus suffering a highside on his seventh lap and requiring a trip to the medical centre.

Roberts soared to the top with six minutes remaining of the afternoon session, Di Giannantonio taking the opportunity to follow suit, for second, on the same lap before Canet set a 2’00.5 to go fastest.

Marcos Ramirez lost the American Racing machine at turn six as the final minute counted down with Celestino Vietti finding his way into fourth at the close of play.

With the flag out there was little change to the final standings - Canet improved on his earlier fastest to claim the session as Roberts, Di Giannantonio and Vietti headed Lowes in FP3’s top-five. Albert Arenas, Schrotter, Gardner, Bezzecchi and Bulega closing the afternoon’s top-10.
