MotoGP Silverstone: Kent bags Moto3 front-row start

Leopard Racing’s Danny Kent will start from third on the grid for tomorrow’s Moto3 race Silverstone, after lapping a time that was under the circuit record, with a 2’13.044 rotation.

The British rider was on provisional pole for most of the session, but just as the chequered flag appeared he was pipped to the post by Estrella Galicia’s Jorge Navarro and Red Bull KTM’s Karel Hanika.

The Spanish racer left his best lap till last and a phenomenal 2’12.440 was good enough to go to P1 and set a new out-right record too, going 0.6 seconds under the circuit best lap set by Alex Rins in 2014.

Initially it was current championship leader, Kent who soared up to the top of the timesheets with a 2’13.506, going under the lap record clocked by Jakub Kornfeil last year, and dominated the majority of the session. At the flag he did enough to hold on to P3 at his home GP. Vazquez and Vinales completed the top five.

There was only one second separating the top nine, but it was a good qualifying outing for Saxoprint RTG’s John McPhee. The wee Scot was outside the top twenty fastest times, but when it counted he pushed his machine to twelfth and will start on the fourth row. Red Bull KTM’s Brad Binder rounded off the top ten.

There were a few wildcard riders taking part today. Motorpoint British Supersport regular, Luke Hedger and HEL Performance British Motostar title challenger, Taz Taylor will start from P36 and P35 respectively for the races tomorrow.
