MotoGP Silverstone: Lorenzo takes charge in second session

Factory Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo took charge of the second MotoGP free practice session at Silverstone this afternoon, banging in the quickest time of the day on just his third lap out of 18 to lead Marc Marquez by a quarter of a second.

Lorenzo's 2'02.734 is already a tenth under the lap record he set last year while Marquez on the cusp, banging in a 2'02.958 and he was the only other rider to go under the 2'03s barrier this afternoon.

His Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa was in third with a 2'03.192 while Alvaro Bautista muscled his way in front of Valentino Rossi for fourth with a 2'02.463, set on his 14th lap of 17.

Rossi, however, spent much of the session using the hard rear tyre and was a little less than three-quarters of a second slower than his team-mate, who set his time on the softer of the Bridgestone options.

Cal Crutchlow also put in his time of 2'03.480 on the hard tyre while Andrea Dovizioso, his Ducati team-mate in 2014, was two-tenths slower but on the softer option. Bradley Smith put his hard rear to good use in eighth with Stefan Bradl struggling in ninth and Nicky Hayden tenth.

Aleix Espargaro was top CRT in 11th after having a session of handbags with Bradl at the top of the session, while Yonny Hernandez and Randy De Puniet filled in the CRT front row. Michael Laverty finished in 20th place and decreased his gap to the leaders.
