MotoGP Silverstone: Stoner's rear tyre 'destroyed' after five laps

Reigning MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner has criticised the series' tyre supplier Bridestone, saying the tyre he was given for this afternoon's MotoGP encounter at Silverstone must have been faulty.

The forthright Aussie, who retires at the end of the year, is convinced there was a problem with it as he lost all grip just five laps into the race. He stopped short of saying it cost him the race but said the tyre was destroyed a long time before it should have been.

"There was definitely something wrong with our (rear) tyre. It should have lasted until lap ten at least before it destroyed itself on one side but we didn't even get five laps out of it before it was very loose. It was extremely disappointing and we did all we could to hang on," said Stoner, speaking to bikesportnews.com.

"It was nothing to do with bikes or how they use their tyre, my tyre was destroyed and it was very early on so that when you know there was something wrong with it. It should be destroyed in the last five laps, not the first.

"Generally, Bridgestone are quite good. We had some issues when there was tyre competition but Bridgestone will never admit there is a problem with the tyre. They go and cut the tyre, don't find any problem, they tell me this every time and won't admit a problem. But now there is a single-tyre championship there is no way they will admit a fault with the tyre.

"It was giving me all the signs very, very early on. I was losing the bike coming into corners just trying to keep on to it. I lost a lot of ground to Jorge try brake late but as I was going in, the back was coming completely round on me, it was very, very tricky to ride. We still would have struggled to win that race but we would have been able to hold on a lot longer without that."
