MotoGP to adopt Superbike-style qualifying for 2013

MotoGP bosses have this evening announced a shake-up for the qualifying procedure next year which bring it much closer to the systems used by World and British Superbikes.

From the season opener, all three free practice combined times will be put together and the fastest ten riders will automatically be put through to the the final qualifying session, called qualifying one

The rest will then fight it out in qualifying two for two additional slots in the session and then the fastest 12 go on to put in times for the top 12 grid positions while 13 and downwards will be placed from their laps in the opening timed session.

The new schedule will look like this:

Day One

Free Practice 1 45 Minutes (Unchanged) Timed for Qualifying Practice Participation

Free Practice 2 45 Minutes (Unchanged) Timed for Qualifying Practice Participation

Day Two - Morning

Free Practice 3 45 Minutes (Unchanged) Timed for Qualifying Practice Participation

Day Two - Afternoon - New Schedule

Free Practice 4 30 Minutes Not Timed for Qualifying Practice Participation

Break 10 Minutes
