Scotland's John McPhee gambled on a slick tyre at the end of the second Moto3 sessin at Valencia to top the session ahead of team-mate Jack Miller and Alex Marquez.
The period started wet but began to dry out at half-time with a line appearing towards the end. McPhee, on the Ongetta bike, was one of only a handful of riders to risk it and edged out Miller.
Folger looked good for third but slipped back behind Marquez, and Brad Binder. Hometown hero Maverick Vinales finished sixth. Danny Kent finished in 10th place while compatriot Danny Webb was three place further back.
