Scotland's John McPhee has celebrated signing a new deal with the Saxoprint RTG Moto3 squad today by bagging his second pole position of the year at the Valencia MotoGP round but it was disaster for title contender Danny Kent who is mired down on the sixth row after a nightmare qualifying.
Oban’s McPhee put in a 1’39.364 on just his fourth lap of the session and no-one else could get better it, with Romano Fenati second 0.086s behind and Kent’s team-mate Efren Vasquez in third a further 0.013s back. McPhee did have another attempt at a quicker lap but crashed unhurt with a few minutes left to run.
Kent, meanwhile, spent the first half of the session working on race pace using the medium tyres. He then came in with the entire field to wait in pitlane. The Leopard Honda man then went out with seven minutes left but just got stuck in traffic. He rolled out of his last lap and finished in 18th place with championship rival Miguel Oliveria heading the second row.
