MotoGP Valencia: Rossi, Vinales raced with 2016 M1 chassis

Movistar Yamaha bosses have admitted that both Valentino Rossi and Maverick Vinales raced the Valencia MotoGP using a 2016 chassis and will test with it again on Tuesday.

The two riders switched to the chassis design used by Johann Zarco all year in morning warm-up with Rossi able to turn in a decent amount of laps but Vinales only a handful, so there was little in the way of setup time, just data from last year.

Rossi managed to take fifth place but was 22s slower over race distance than last year even though he had to fight through the pack in 2016. Vinales, who has never ridden the old bike, ended in 12th.

“Last night we changed the chassis, we take a chassis from 2016 to try to understand the way. Unfortunately, it is not like you put chassis and everything is better, “ said Rossi, speaking at the track.

“We did this because the programme was to try the bike at the test on Tuesday and Wednesday anyway. So we said: ‘Why not today?’. For sure it was a risky choice, but with my bike we know more-or-less where we are and sometimes in a race you can understand more than in ten days of testing.”
