Pedro Acosta only KTM rider straight to Q2 as MotoGP rookie stars again at COTA

Gold & Goose

Pedro Acosta showed little signs of wilting under any added pressure to arise from his sensational maiden MotoGP podium last time out as he comfortably booked his place into Q2 for the Grand Prix of The Americas.

The Spaniard has established himself as a revelation since making his premier class debut on the Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing Tech3 KTM, leading to his surprise run to third place during Round 2 in Portugal.

Arriving in the United States firmly in the spotlight, Acosta once again took the added attention in his stride during Friday Practice for the COTA event, setting a top three time in FP1 before ending the day by booking his passage through to Q2 in fifth.

“Super happy, top five overall was not easy, it’s not an easy track for a rookie but we passed it,” he told the MotoGP website.

“It’s important to be in Q2 for the races, but I am happy because we made nice steps between the morning and afternoon.

“We know more or less the problems we need to improve for tomorrow, it’s quite tricky sometimes.”

Notably, Acosta would emerge as the only KTM-equipped rider to end Friday inside the top ten after factory riders Brad Binder and Jack Miller fell well short come the conclusion of Practice.

However, Acosta says he is just focusing on his own progress.

“We need to understand that they are fast and tomorrow are going to [be fast], I am not focused on that, I am focused on what I am doing.

“Our base is good for this weekend and we need to enjoy this. Other days will not be like this, they will be more difficult, so we need to enjoy the learning process.”
