Portimao Moto2 test: Canet in control with new lap record

Flexbox HP40’s Aron Canet claimed control of Sunday’s standings in the Portimao Moto2 test despite an impressive late challenge from Pedro Acosta.

With less than a tenth separating the top four on day one at Portimao, Sunday’s action looked just as close as the intermediate class completed another three 70-minute sessions on the Algarve.

Aspar’s Jake Dixon had once again been heading the afternoon’s final session before KTM rookie Acosta took charge, 0.111s quicker than the Brit’s best with teammate Augusto Fernandez sliding into second. Aron Canet and Italtrans’ Joe Roberts completed the day’s top five with the American half a second adrift.

The final ten minutes saw the latter two swap positions as Roberts improved to within two-tenths of the reigning Moto3 Champion but the Spaniard’s second session 1’41.892 effort was enough to take both the honours overall and an all-time lap record in the process.

Having struggled with his left wrist during Saturday’s windy conditions at the demanding rollercoaster layout, Sam Lowes chose again to sit out of the third session with the Brit also ruled out of Monday's running due to the tendonitis issue. The Elf Marc VDS rider completed day two 20th overall with a 1’43.330 fastest and 34 laps dispatched.
