Factory Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo has set the fastest time on day one of MotoGP testing at Sepang but was only a third of a second quicker than Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa with Briton Cal Crutchlow in third place.
Lorenzo is primarily working on corner exit problems identified at Valencia and lapped in 2'01.657 compared to Pedrosa's 2'02.003. Crutchlow stayed ahead of Ben Spies and Valentino Rossi who finished fifth fastest and only seven-tenths slower than his former Yamaha team-mate.
Casey Stoner didn't ride on day one as he strained his back warming up. Hs place was taken by test rider Kosuke Akiyoshi.
“I’m very happy with today. For the first ride on the bike in some time, it’s been very positive. Yamaha has worked very hard over the winter for this M1. I can see very easily where I have to adapt my riding style for the bike and I can see a lot of potential. We have many areas where we can improve so I’m looking forward to beginning again tomorrow. I’m also very happy that my finger is fine and doesn’t affect my riding at all," said Lorenzo.
