After two years away Suzuki has discussed the chance of returning to MotoGP.
Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki has recently discussed the idea of the Japanese manufacturer returning to racing. However, there are no official discussions or plans taking place at the moment for Suzuki to come back to MotoGP.
At the end of the 2022 MotoGP season, Suzuki surprisingly decided to quit MotoGP. This came after they signed a long-term contract with Dorna to remain in MotoGP for five years.
The manufacturer that won the 2020 MotoGP World Championship with Joan Mir explained that their decision to leave MotoGP came due to financial pressures. As well as leaving MotoGP Suzuki also withdrew all factory teams in motorsport.
In an interview with Corriere dello Sport in Italy, Suzuki-san opened the door for a racing return but it will not occur until the brand has a “complete and varied” range of bikes for its customers.
“The victories in MotoGP were, of course, very important for us,” he said.
“However, it doesn't matter much if we don't have a complete and diverse range of models for all motorcycle enthusiasts. And I don't think we are in that situation at the moment.
“It is important for us to quickly offer a complete product range that satisfies today's riders. If everything goes well, we will then return to racing - and win again.”
Dorna had been keeping Suzuki's old grid slots available for a new manufacturer wanting to join MotoGP. There had been rumours of BMW joining the series or Suzuki returning after multiple years away.
In August Dorna's chief sporting officer, Carlos Ezpeleta, said the two slots were no longer available. If any new manufacturers wanted to join MotoGP they would have to merge with an existing team.
