Silly season may be beginning to calm down in MotoGP with only three rides still up for grabs, but in Moto2 and Moto3 it is in full swing.
Last week at the Red Bull Ring there were plenty of high-end moves, such as Ai Ogura to Trackhouse Racing, Franco Morbidelli to VR46 and Jake Dixon to the ELF Marc VDS Racing Team. However, some under-the-radar deals took place.
Moto2 Rider Moves and Rumours:
Two riders in the Moto2 class re-signed with their current teams for the 2025 season. Deniz Oncu has re-signed for the Red Bull KTM Ajo squad after a difficult start to 2024, due to injuries. Aron Canet will also stay with his current squad with the Fantic Racing team next year.
There have also been two riders promoted from Moto3 to Moto2 for the 2025 season. Collin Veijer will join Oncu in the Red Bull KTM Ajo squad next season. With Ivan Ortola moving up to the MT Helmets - MSi Moto2 squad.
As well as confirmed deals there have been plenty of rumours surrounding the current Moto2 riders and where they will be in 2025.
The Austrian Grand Prix race winner, Celestino Vietti, is without a ride for 2025. The Italian has been riding for the Red Bull KTM Ajo squad this season but will be replaced by Veijer. The Italian rider has been linked with the Speed Up squad for next season to replace the departing Fermin Aldeguer.
The other current Speed Up rider, Alonso Lopez, is also supposedly on his way out of the team at the end of 2024. The Spanish rider had been linked with the Pramac Yamaha squad but has been overlooked. Lopez is now being linked with the Yamaha Master Camp Moto2 squad, which will be supported by Pramac in 2025.
However, Lopez is not guaranteed a ride in the Pramac Yamaha Master Camp squad. Two other riders could end up in the Yamaha junior team. Tony Arbolino and Joe Roberts are also being discussed for the Pramac Yamaha Master Camp squad.
With Jake Dixon leaving the CFMOTO Aspar Racing Team there will be one available seat. However, it also appears that Izan Guevara will be on his way out of the Aspar squad as well after two difficult years in Moto2.
The obvious replacement for Dixon is CFMOTO Aspar Racing Moto3 rider, David Alonso. The Colombian rider is leading the Moto3 Championship and seemed destined for the Aspar Moto2 squad.
If Guevara does leave then there would be another available ride in a top Moto2 team. The rider who has emerged as the favourite to replace Guevara is Moto3 rider Dani Holgado. The Spaniard would leave the Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 Moto3 squad for his Moto2 promotion.
Moto3 Rider Moves and Rumours:
One rider did put pen to paper after the Austrian Grand Prix for a Moto3 ride in 2025. David Munoz will leave the BOE Motorsport squad as he heads to the Intact GP Moto3 team.
The remaining rumours in the Moto3 class all surround the Leopard Racing Team. Angel Piqueras reportedly wants to switch from a Honda machine to a KTM in 2025. After Ortola got promoted in the MT Helmets - MSi squad and has left one of their Moto3 seats open. This is the ride that Piqueras is targeting.
The last major Moto3 move that could be happening is the return of Ayumu Sasaki. The Japanese rider moved up to Moto2 at the end of the 2023 season. However, Sasaki has struggled in 2024 in the Moto2 class and is trying to get back into the Moto3 class for 2025. Sasasaki is reportedly seeking a Leopard Racing seat next year, which could be available if Piqueras moves teams.
