Collin Veijer has secured his second pole position of the 2023 Moto3 World Championship season as he led Ayumu Sasaki to ensure a 1-2 on the grid for the Husqvarna Intact GP team.
Another fillip for the youngster as he nears the conclusion of his rookie campaign in the Moto3 ranks, Veijer worked with team-mate Sasaki during the closing stages of the Q2 session to give them the edge over the competition.
Indeed, the Dutchman has enjoyed a notable upturn in performance since the summer break, with this latest pole position - following on from his maiden Saturday success in Austria - offering up a chance for him to follow up his maiden Moto3 win in Malaysia earlier this month with another.
Alternatively, it could be Sasaki’s golden opportunity to get the victory that has eluded him so far in 2023 despite being just a few points shy of ending the season as runner-up overall.
However, they will face competition from Deniz Oncu, who joins the Husqvarna duo on the front row in third place, ahead of a second row comprising Joel Kelso - the Australian delivering another fine qualifying performance on the CFMoto PruestelGP machine - David Alonso, who gritted his teeth following Friday’s two crashes, and Ivan Ortola.
In the fight for third in the overall standings, Friday pacesetter Daniel Holgado suffered a set-back when a high-side during Q2 consigned him to 18th on the grid. It means the Spaniard - who is level on points with Oncu too - has work to do if he is to overhaul the seven point deficit to Alonso in third.
Crowned Moto3 World Champion last time out in Qatar, Jaume Masia gets his final race in the category underway from eighth place, with Jose Antonio Rueda and David Munoz flanking him on row three.
