Vote for your 2020 BSN MotoGP Rider of the Year

This year’s MotoGP World Championship was one of the most wide open ever seen in the premier class and when six-time Marc Marquez crashed at the opening round, the subsequent broken arm putting him out for the rest of the year, the title was up for grabs.

Fabio Quartararo grabbed the early initiative with a double win at Jerez but although he added a third at Catalunya, the Petronas Yamaha rider failed to deliver elsewhere. He was overshadowed by team-mate Franco Morbidelli who took three wins and two more podiums to claim second overall.

However, it was Joan Mir and Suzuki that ultimately prevailed, the 2017 Moto 3 World Champion stringing together the most consistent season of the entire field, claiming his first ever MotoGP win and a stunning maiden title.

Team-mate Alex Rins also stood on the top step as did Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso, the perennial class bridesmaid having to settle for fourth overall this time around.

Expected title challenger Maverick Vinales won at Misano with team-mate Valentino Rossi having to settle for just one podium in 2020 but Jack Miller starred for Pramac Ducati with a string of fine performances.

It was also the year KTM cracked the elite with Brad Binder giving them their first ever MotoGP victory at Brno and Miguel Oliveira taking two more wins in Austria and Portugal whilst Pol Espargaro took five impressive podiums.

With Marquez injured, Honda’s best performances came from Takaaki Nakagami with Alex Marquez also impressing on occasions. Cal Crutchlow also spent much of 2020 injured and retired from full-time racing at the end of the season.
