"We were not able to work in a normal way" - Marquez reacts to his Friday Practice sessions at Motegi

Gold and Goose

Marc Marquez was second on the timesheets on Friday at Motegi despite having several issues throughout the day.

Marc Marquez ended the opening day of the Japanese Grand Prix in second place. The Spaniard was only beaten by Brad Binder around Motegi as he ended up as the fastest Ducati rider on Friday.

Despite his pace in the time attacks, Marquez insists that he had a 'strange day' at Motegi. The eight-time World Champion claims he does not understand the tyres in long runs and had many small issues throughout the day.

"Today was a strange day," Marquez admitted. "First of all the weather and second we had a difficult second Practice in the afternoon with various small problems. But we were not able to work in a normal way, so we didn't understand anything about the tyres but fortunately, in the time attack, I felt good. Now we need to find that consistency."

In recent Grands Prix Marquez has learnt the importance of a good Qualifying position in modern MotoGP. The Gresini Racing rider knew that he had to battle through his problems to guarantee himself a spot in Q2 for Saturday.

Marquez and his Gresini crew had to try their best to limit the multiple small issues that they were having with their Ducati GP23.

"Many things I can't go into details," Marquez replied when asked about the issues he was experiencing. "We had a lot of small different problems, it was a very important Practice for that reason. I knew that it was important to get into Q2 which is why I spent a lot of time in the box to prepare well and fix the problems, then do the time attack."

'It is one of the best helmets I have' - Marc Marquez

Finally, Marquez was asked about his 2024 Japanese Grand Prix helmet that he debuted on Friday. The Spaniard has shown up with a Japanese-inspired design that has already become a fan favourite.

"It has become a super nice design," Marquez said. "I received different drawings from Shoei Japan and Shoei designers and they always try to find Japanese style. This one looked nice on the computer, but then when I had it in my hands I realised it was one of the best helmets I have, the small details are amazing. So, as we know the Japanese quality is super high."
