Team GB’s Glen Richards said he was absolutely ‘chuffed’ to bits with the 3-2 result he scored in races one and two today at the Phillip Island Classic.
Richards, 44, missed most of Thursday’s non official practice day due to electrical dramas, which was always going to make things hard work for him.
After qualifying fourth with a time of 1'38.139, Richards managed to guide his Team Winfield Yamaha Harris F1 1250 to third place in race one, finishing 4.290 seconds behind race winner, Jeremy McWilliams.
In race one, Richards had a brake problem, which saw the brake lever coming back to the bar and it just boiled the fluid. However, between races Richards put a whole new type of fluid through his machine and flushed it all out and had brakes in the second race, which he described as, “So much better.
“In race two I had the pace and managed to get to Davo and Jeremy, after I passed Troy,” Richards explained to bikesportnews.com.
“However, I was just a bit chicken really. In the old days I would have probably had a go, but I just simply enjoyed riding the bike,” added the likeable character, who qualifies for the Brit team as his mum was born in Manchester.
As Richards heads into the final two races tomorrow, one point behind McWilliams and two points behind Dave Johnson for the individual honours, when asked would he be prepared to lay his ‘balls’ on the line of he had a chance to possibly win the iconic trophy, he replied: “Not really. I’m just enjoying riding the bike. I really enjoy riding the bike, but I have certainly lost that competitive edge to really stick it in there. I would be happy with a couple of finishes tomorrow and if I can get that top five again, I would be bloody rapt,” concluded Richards, while sipping some Horlicks.
