Former MotoGP rider Chris Burns is gearing up for a two-man scrap in a bid to become top Honda and top Dunlop runner as the ONK Dutch Superbike Championship heads into its penultimate round at Assen this weekend.
The Newcastle rider and the GS Racing team have enjoyed a string of podiums in recent rounds and now sit third place in the championship. The title has already been sewn up by BMW’s Arie Vos, with Raymond Schouten looking safe in second place.
This means the big fight over the final two rounds will be between Burns who has 130 points and 2010 champion Danny de Boer who is just three points behind. With both riders piloting Hondas, Burns says the battle lines are drawn.
“I want third in the championship, it’s that simple – but of course so does de Boer. The championship may be won but mine starts now. I want to be top Honda and top Dunlop rider. There are two rounds left and three points between us. I need to beat him and he needs to beat me. The pressure is on. I want to finish third in my first year and as outgoing champion he certainly doesn’t want to be beaten by the series rookie. We’re going to have a mammoth end to the season," he said.
