Most 6-Hour: BMW wins in historic style

BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team won the 6 Hours of Most after a dramatic last lap dance with race-long rivals, YART.

Markus Reiterberger crossed the line just 0.07 seconds ahead of the R1, for BMW’s maiden endurance victory by the smallest margin in the championship’s history. Yoshimura SERT Motul coming home in their own hard-fought third position, to claim the 2021 FIM EWC crown.

Having secured the pole position on Thursday, a technical issue on the grid meant the Official Yamaha Team of Niccolò Canepa, Marvin Fritz, and Karel Hanika got off to a disappointing start, firmly at the back of the field. A determined fight back ensued across the six hours of competition, with the number 7 briefly taking the lead around the four hour mark before Ilya Mikhalchik, Kenny Foray and Reiterberger’s BMW squad took charge once again.

The race completed in climactic style with a head-to-head between countrymen Reiterberger and Fritz. The latter setting new fastest race laps four times over the final half hour as he pushed hard to recover the ground lost, with the eventual record - a 1’33.875 - recorded on his penultimate lap. The two Germans crossed the line less than a tenth apart for a spectacular finish with BMW winning out as YART completed a challenging season with their first trip to the podium, in second.

While SERT secured the 2021 World Championship - their 17th to date - their race podium was far from certain. Gregg Black, Xavier Simeon and Sylvain Guintoli defended the position from Webike SRC Kawasaki France Trickstar’s Jérémy Guarnoni, Erwan Nigon and David Checa for the majority of the race, with the factory Kawasaki team taking third in the overall championship standings.

Gino Rea, Sheridan Morais and Dan Linfoot’s Wójcik Racing Team ran strongly at the front of the field throughout the six hour contest, to finish fifth.
