MotoGP Germany: Vinales expected to be closer to the front

Maverick Vinales has admitted he expected to be closer be closer to the front of the German MotoGP despite claiming a podium at the Sachsenring.

The Spaniard claimed his third podium of the year around the German circuit, although he did it the hard way as he has for a large majority of the season. Slow early race pace saw Vinales fighting through late to pick off riders and secure the final podium spot.

Despite this, the Spaniard was frustrated that the problems continue despite hard work and attempts to change his riding style about his factory M1.

"For sure it’s good to have a little bit more consistent result, but I think being on the podium in the Sachsenring last year, where we suffered a lot but this year seems to be much better," said Vinales.

"So I think on the bike we’ve improved quite a lot but anyway there is still steps to do also from my side. We did very well in the last ten/fifteen laps but I didn’t expect to be seventh, I expected to be there in the front trying to battle.

"But anyway, it’s fine. There’s still time to work and become every stronger. I think at the moment were recovering this feeling but I can be fast at the end so I need to improve my riding style to be fast at the beginning."

Whilst unhappy with the electronics and his acceleration, the Spaniard is happy with the chassis on his factory Yamaha and thinks it is something that he can build on.

"Finally we found a really good balance I think our bike is really competitive on the chassis side, but we need to improve the electronics," he said.

"I think today, in my race I lost an opportunity on the main straight because I could not overtake. So I think we are doing small steps, I am also concentrating a lot on riding style trying to supply a little bit to where we don’t have with the electronics. We did well but there is still there is a lot of room to improve."
