Second Misano Race Replaces MotoGP Kazakhstan GP

The MotoGP Kazakhstan Grand Prix has been replaced by the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix on the 2024 MotoGP calendar.

The Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix will be the third race in MotoGP's history to go under that name, after the previous editions in 2020 and 2021. As then, this year's edition will be run at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, which will also host the Grand Prix of San Marino and the Rimini Riviera on 6-8 September, as well as a post-race test on 9 September.

The reason for the addition of the second Misano race is the cancellation of the Kazakhstan Grand Prix. Kazakhstan originally joined the MotoGP calendar for 2023, but its Sokol International Circuit was not ready in time to host a race last year. Added to the calendar once again in 2024, regional flooding in Central Asia towards the end of spring meant that the race had to be postponed, eventually being rescheduled for 27-29 September when the Indian Grand Prix, which was originally scheduled for that date, was cancelled.

However, logistical issues resulting from the aforementioned Central Asian flooding "have rendered the event impossible to hold in 2024," MotoGP said in a statement.

The statement reads: "The FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports announce the cancellation of the Grand Prix of Kazakhstan. Operational and logistical issues arising from the earlier flooding across the region have rendered the event impossible to hold in 2024.

"Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will instead host the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix from the 20th to the 22nd of September.

"MotoGP is excited to stage a second event at the iconic Adriatic venue, giving the passionate Italian fanbase a further opportunity to see the world’s most exciting sport in action."

The Emilia-Romagna race will take place on the same date, 20-22 September, two weeks after the San Marino GP, one week before the Indonesian Grand Prix, and on the same date as the inaugural WorldSBK race at the Italian Cremona circuit.
