Scott Redding claimed his third victory of the 2025 British Superbike Championship season in a Race 1 at Assen abandoned after ten laps due to torrid weather conditions.
In a race that kicked off just as rain started to fall, the conditions would simply worsen until the red flag was deployed with 10 of the scheduled 18 laps having been completed.
Though attempts were made to restart an hour later - even getting as far as beginning the warm-up lap - riders protested the conditions before being promptly called back to the pit-lane. With rain continuing to fall at the Dutch venue, the decision was eventually taken to call an end to proceedings entirely.
With the race failing to meet the two-thirds distance requirement for the result to be called with full points, half-points are subsequently awarded on the final classification.
Ending the race in this way has direct ramifications to the championship battle after Bradley Ray crashed out just moments before the red flag was deployed. While he would have been permitted to join the back of the grid for any restart, calling the results at the time of the red flag means he isn't classified.
That will be a consolation for Kyle Ryde, who lacked pace in the terrible conditions but ultimately survived to the end in an eventual sixth place finish.
Up at the front though it was Redding who claimed a thoroughly deserved win, the Hager PBM Ducati rider having relieved the fast-starting Ryde mid-way around the opening lap for a lead he'd hold to the end.
Instantly getting the hammer down while rivals tripped over one another in the evolving conditions, Redding had stretched his advantage to four seconds after just three laps.
He was still made to work hard for victory though as rivals attempted to break down the gap, not least Christian Iddon who after clawing his way into second place early on, was taking chunks out of Redding's advantage until a wild off-track moment at Turn 1 on lap five blunted his challenge.
Iddon's error came just a lap after Fraser Rogers - who scored his maiden BSB podium in similar conditions at Knockhill earlier in the year - had crashed out of third place at Dulkersloot. He wasn't the only rider to crash out of a front-running position though with Max Cook dumping it out of third on lap nine before Ray did the same shortly afterwards while running in the same spot.
Their misfortune played into the hands of Leon Haslam, the experienced rider keeping his cool after a bad start to work his way into second place. He too closed on Redding, getting the gap down to just over a second adrift before the race was stopped.
He was nonetheless classified on the podium, along with Danny Kent, who benefited from Cook and Ray's late exits to claim third place.
While the rain hampered his chances of making the most of a fine front row starting position, Charlie Nesbitt showed experience beyond his years to make it home for fourth on the MasterMac Honda.
Iddon put on a superb fightback to claim fifth, though will be frustrated not to be higher having been the fastest rider on track for much of the race. He nonetheless gets to start Race 2 from pole position.
In sixth, Ryde will be relieved with the outcome in what appeared to be a troubling race for the points' leader. The Nitrous Competitions Yamaha rider began well to take the lead at Turn 1 but thereafter was simply picked off by rider-after-rider as it looked certain he'd sacrifice points to Ray in the title battle.
However, he also didn't make any mistakes and sixth place - worth seven points in the end - means his lead instead swells to 35 points over his Yamaha counterpart.
In seventh, Jaimie van Sikkelerus scored a big personal best finish on the TAG Racing Honda. Competing on home soil, the Dutchman came into the race having only ever scored a single point for a 15th place finish since making his BSB debut in 2024.
John McPhee was another to take a cross-country route during the race but stayed upright for eighth place, while Luke Hedger joined van Sikkelerus in claiming his first-ever BSB top ten in ninth.
Riding the Yamaha R1 in the wet for the first time, Glenn Irwin played it safe to complete the top ten, ahead of Scott Swann and local wild-card Wayne Tessels.
Despite being forced to pit for different tyres, Peter Hickman, Rory Skinner and Richard Kerr were all rewarded for their perseverance with points in 13th, 14th and 15th.
