Results from the 2026 Moto2 Thai Grand Prix at Buriram, the opening round of the season.
Manuel Gonzalez won the opening Moto2 race of the season in a Thai Grand Prix that was red flagged twice.
The first red flag came out on lap four of the original start. Senna Agius suffered a technical issue exiting turn nine, leaving David Alonso nowhere to go. The colombian hit Agius' rear tyre and high-sided, and was collected by Filip Salac behind as he slid towards the run-off area.
Alonso was taken to the medical centre where it was determined that he had not sustained any fractures, as confirmed by the Aspar Team.
Agius and Salac were both able to take the restart, albeit from pit lane as they were a lap down when the red flag was thrown.
The restart only got as far as turn three before Sergio Garcia tagged the rear wheel of Barry Baltus, losing the front and collecting Luca Lunetta who was on the outside of the move. Both Lunetta and Garcia stayed in the run-off area until the field came around for lap two, at which point the second red flag was thrown.
Because the second start didn't get past three laps, it was a full restart, meaning Agius and Salac had to start from the pits again. They'd go on to finish 18th and 19th, respectively.
Dani Holgado had been leading both of the previous attempts at the race when the red flag was thrown. He made the holeshot on the third start from pole position, but he was quickly moved back to second by Izan Guevara at turn three. Manuel Gonzalez made his own move on Holgado at turn seven on the second lap before going on to challenge Guevara.
The third race was scheduled for only seven laps, so by the time Gonzalez was up to second there were only five laps remaining. He stalked Guevara for another three laps before making his move to the front, again at turn seven, on the penultimate lap.
A strong final lap-and-a-half from Gonzalez ensured Guevara was never close enough to try to re-pass, at least until the final corner. Gonzalez protected the inside at turn 12 on the last lap, forcing Guevara to the outside.
Guevara tried to make that work by out-braking Gonzalez and cutting early to the apex to take the line away, but Gonzalez simply controlled Guevara on his outside, matching his speed in braking to not allow Guevara space to square him off on the run to the line.
The Pramac rider tried to carry the speed around the outside, but the difference was not enough compared to Gonzalez, who took his second win at Buriram in as many visits.
Guevara held on to second despite being forced wide at the last corner, beating Holgado to the line. Ivan Ortola was a part of the front group, too, in fourth, but was never able to put himself in a podium position.
Collin Veijer took fifth place, just over a second behind the front group and ahead of Celestino Vietti, who beat his former teammate Alonso Lopez to sixth. Lopez took seventh, ahead of Dani Munoz, Deniz Oncu, and Ayumu Sasaki who completed the top-10.
