Oxford Tag Triumph's Billy McConnell turned his pole position into his first win of the season in the Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship at Thruxton in race one this saturday afternoon, snatching it away unexpectedly from Alastair Seeley of Relentless Suzuki by and Sam Warren of Seton Yamaha.
It was Gearlink Kawasaki's Ben Wilson who took the lead into the first corner followed by McConnell for the 12 lap race. Noticeably Seeley had a good start from the second row up to third. Lurking behind was Jack Kennedy of Colin Appleyard who made the first of many impressive attacks to come. After making a dive he leaped to second place, but Wilson already had started to pull away slightly.
Continuing with the pace, lap two Seeley pushed hard to dive ahead of Kennedy for second and it looked like the hote battle was going to be between these two as Kennedy hung on to his back wheel and it wasn't long till Kennedy retrieved the place back before unfortunately crashing out of the race.
Meanwhile McConnell who was now in fourth was leading a pack of riders that included Warren and Dean Hipwell of Bladen Electrical who had now moved ahead of Oxford Tag Triumph's Paul Young, losing out on his front row start.
Back at the front Warren who had got ahead of Seeley had hunted Wilson down and as Warren was visibly planning his attack, Seeley carried out an astonishing outbreaking move passing the both of them to take the lead. With both riders caught out unexpectedly Warren seized the opportunity to move to second ahead of Wilson. Then the fun really began.
Wilson did retrieve his top spot back a little while later but by this time both McConnell and Hipwell had drawn closer making the leading group a pack of five riders. On lap 10 Wilson and Warren got their revenge on Seeley by repeating his attack earlier, they moved ahead of him in one move, pushing him back to third.
As the five riders reached the last overtaking opportunity of the race, immediately it looked liked Warren was going to take Wilson, but then Seeley stepped out to take both of them. Just as you thought it was all over, McConnell set the moment of the race and breathtakingly went from fourth to first to take the win.
Padgett's Honda's Plater Steve who qualified in 14th and had a crash earlier in the day recovered to take 8th in the race. In the cup series it was T3 Racing's John Simpson who constantly led the cup championship, Matthew Hoyle of Mackrory Racing looked to be comfortable in second before unfortunately having to retire. This promoted Shaun Winfield of Oxford Tag Triumph ahead of Sam Hornsey of Horsney Steels temporarily to second until Hornsey towards the end of the race stole second place.
