DONINGTON BSB: BYRNE TAKES ANOTHER DOUBLE

Shane Byrne has added another double to his tally of wins this afternoon, notching up a race two victory which mirrored his earlier win in the British Superbike Championship at Donington Park. This takes Byrne to six wins out of eight races and he is now 68pts clear in the title race.
The Airwaves Ducati man, who was on a harder compound tyres than most of the rest of the field, left it until the last two laps to pass leader Leon Haslam and open a small gap over the final circuit.
Haslam's HM Plant Honda had led for a large proportion of the race, with more than a second advantage at mid-point, but the pack - which included Cal Crutchlow, Leon Camier and James Ellison - were able to peg the local man back.Shakey gave himself some work to do after being eighth into the first corner following his team mate Leon Camier,  the pack was again led by James Ellison on the Hydrex Honda ahead of Leon Haslam, who had a storming start, and Michael Rutter.  Cal Crutchlow briefly took the lead but was pushed back down to second.  Michael Rutter overtook Ellison and the by end of lap one Karl Harris pushed Ellison back another position.

A couple of laps into the race Karl Harris had fallen further down the order, Michael Laverty of Relentless Suzuki briefly appeared in second after starting from fifth on the grid. As Cal Crutchlow and Michael Rutter battled for third they both went wide at Melbourne loop allowing Laverty to move ahead of them both.  It wasn't long before Crutchlow retook the position and James Ellison took another position off him to move into fourth after passing Rutter.

On lap six, both Airwaves Ducati started to make their moves starting with Camier overtaking Michael Laverty followed by Shakey making an inside move at the Foggy Esses.  Tom Sykes had worked his way up to through the grid to overtake Michael Laverty on lap 12 to take sixth position.    Meanwhile at the front, Camier had made the leading group into four riders before Shakey made it  five half a lap later.

Shakey won the Airwaves battle on lap 13 moving in front of his team mate into fourth to hunt down the two HM Plant Hondas and Ellison.  It only took another lap before Shakey made his move at the Melbourne loop as Ellison went wide allowing both Airwaves Ducati to move ahead, that is the point of the race with which he gained his overall finishing position of fifth place.

Camier not willing to settle in fourth tried an inside move on Shakey with which he then went wide and lost the position.  That was his missed opportunity as Bryne went under Crutchlow at Melbourne loop after Cal left a gap, he then replicated the move a lap later on Haslam to take the lead.  On the penultimate lap Bryne had an out of seat moment coming out of Coppice, but held it together to cross the finish line.

Throughout the race Michael Rutter went backwards to gain an overall position of eighth, Karl Harris finished seventh but was probably still suffering with the arm pump that dogged him in race one. Simon Andrews had another solid start from a low qualifying position to take ninth.

Within the Cup Championship there was no stopping the Quay Honda rider Gary Mason who took first place finishing an overall 10th, followed by John Laverty who finished down in 16th and Tom Tunstall picked up a double third place finish to round off the podium.

It didn't go well for all the riders as Aaron Zanotti couldn't improve on his results from race one suffering a second retirement, along with Billy McConnell from MSS Kawasaki and the unfortunate Chris Burn who crashed at the Essess on lap 11.
