Oulton BSB: Cox clinches Superstock 1000 victory

ILR Kawasaki’s Victor Cox stormed to win his first Pirelli National Superstock 1000 victory of the year and proved to be the one to beat, as he took the lead and dominated the race from the fouth lap. He was unable to be caught by his peers as he crossed the finishing line but Homer Racinglionic’s Hudson Kennaugh was not going to let the Trowbridge rider take an easy race victory and battled to the bitter end, but it was not enough and Kennaugh had to settle for second place.

JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Joe Burns was not too far behind the leading two riders and had a consistent time out on track, and was able to pull away from Swedish rider and Cox’s team-mate Filip Backlund, on the penultimate lap. But Burns could not manage to keep up with the speed of Cox and the young rider had to contend the final step of the podium.

The ‘veterans’ of the class did not have the most successful time out on the circuit. Steve Brogan Racing’s, um, Steve Brogan ended the race just outside the top ten in eleventh, and TT legend John McGuinness finished the race in fifteenth, just in front of American rookie, Team WD40’s Tommy Aquino. RAF Reserves Racing’s Simon Andrews scrapped into the top twenty finishing in nineteenth, and McGuinness Padgett’s Honda team-mate Bruce Anstey crossed the line in last place.

It was a race that was filled with technical issues which saw many riders succumb to the pits. Accident Advice Solicitors’s Jonny Blackshaw retired on lap four, and was quickly joined by Team Green G&S Racing’s Jonathan Howarth. Buildbase BMW’s Lee Jackson did not have the start he wanted as the youngster found himself way down the grid after the opening lap, but he crashed with only five laps remaining, ending his chance of making it into the points.
