Tyco Suzuki's Josh Brookes has taken everything he learned from his Suzuka Eight-Hours experience, where he took second place, and is applying it to his performance in the MCE British Superbike Championship, starting this weekend at Oulton Park.
The Australian had to employ a different way of riding at the Japanese event and it has made him question what he is doing, and how he is doing it, in his effort to secure a first BSB title in 2013.
"Having to ride a bike which wasn't set-up specifically for me and on tyres that were completely different to the Pirellis I have ridden on for the last four years made think about everything I am doing now," said Brookes, speaking to bikesportnews.com.
"It's not a question of complacency, that's not the word, but you get used to doing the same kind of thing every time. You don't change you seat position because you're comfortable with it, you don't mess with the ride height because you know it works. But if you do start to change stuff purely to see what happens, you might find something.
"As a young rider, you soak up information like a sponge but when you're ten years into a career, you probably stop learning so much. At Suzuka, I learned an awful lot of things about an awful lot of things, so I can take that into the rest of the season."
Talking about the weekend specifically, Brookes believes he is getting close to completing the small jigsaw puzzle which was started at the beginning of the year, with a stride made forward at Brands Hatch.
"The spec of engine we had at Brands was very peaky and it was difficult to ride with the nature of the track, so we had to change it, wind the power down and make it more rideable. I think that sort of spec will be useful at Oulton but not so much at places like Silverstone.
"The other spec engine, which has a lot of top-end power, will be really good at the faster, more flowing track we go to later in the year but for Oulton, my crew chief thinks that the engine we raced with at Brands will be pretty close."
