Oulton BSB: Haslam hails 'best weekend ever' after triple win

JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam is the new MCE British Superbike championship leader after dominating the race weekend with a triple victory at Oulton Park.

The former World Superbike star bagged a maximum points tally at the Cheshire circuit and now has a three point advantage over title rival, Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne in the standings.

Haslam already confirmed his spot in the Showdown, before coming into the ninth round of the series and now all the points are set to 500 with the podium credits added on top, which gives the Smalley rider a slight advantage going into his home round of Donington Park

“To achieve (three race wins) is another thing and it is a big credit to the team and we have had an awesome weekend and I think it this is my best weekend ever,” said Haslam, speaking after his hat-trick of race victories.

“To get the three wins and off the back of the win from Cadwell it is good timing. The boys have worked really hard and the bike is coming together and we have a good base. There are a few areas we want to improve on and look at but it is looking good.

“For me I look at things race by race and try to win as many as we can. Donington is a good one but it is also a track I think the Ducati’s will be strong at.”

In both races today Haslam opted for the harder front and rear Pirelli tyres, whereas many riders decided to go with the softer rear. The ‘gamble’ definitely paid off as he was able to keep a strong pace all weekend.

Speaking after race two Haslam added: “I went out there and we have got the championship lead and that is a big bonus. I took the gamble again on the one and for me it was a lot harder race with the one that time, as the temperature was getting up and maybe the other guys lasted a bit longer and mine was a bit more greasy, but we got it done. A one-two for the team so I can’t complain.”
