Tyco BMW’s Christian Iddon has been labelled around the MCE British Superbike paddock as the ‘Showdown spoiler’, after topping both free practice sessions at Donington Park today.
The Stockport rider missed the cut to be in the top six and the chance to fight for the title, and is naturally disappointed by this, but he wants to do the best he can in the final few rounds.
Iddon was quick in both wet and dry conditions and was even able to lap under lap record pace, and was only two tenths off the outright circuit record at the Leicestershire circuit, after a 1’29.053.
Iddon was also happy with both the soft and hard rear Pirelli tyres, and is undecided as to which compound he will use in the races on Sunday.
“The start of the year I was the dark horse, now I am the Showdown spoiler. I wish I was the champion elect! We missed the cut which is disappointing so now it is just case of going out there and doing the best we can for the last few rounds,” said Iddon, speaking to bikesportnews.com at the track.
“This morning was my sort of conditions to start with. I am good in the damp and we have been struggling in the wet, so when it rained we did a lot of laps and made progress so that was good.
“This afternoon was good, and we have gone a different way since Oulton with the settings and that seems better and we want to continue in that way. We used both combinations of tyres and we tried three different shock settings, and tomorrow we will go out on used tyres on both compounds, so we are undecided on tyre choices.
“I think we have reasonable pace on both (soft and hard tyres) and I don’t think I have ever lapped a 1’29 before here, and it was nice to see those times and those consistencies.”
