Brands BSB: Race one winner Hickman aims for Riders Cup accolade

JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Peter Hickman was victorious in the first of the MCE British Superbike triple-header race's at Brands Hatch, and was able to dominate out in the wet conditions this afternoon.

He was the only remaining JG Speedfit bike on the Kent track when the chequered flag appeared, and had to watch on as team-mate’s Leon Haslam and James Ellison crashed out whilst in contention for the race win.

Now the road racer has the Riders Cup as his next target, and aims to finish seventh in the overall championship standings. He is on course to do just that as he currently lies seventh and on a total of 213 points.

“To finish the race was a hard thing. I watched James crashed in front of me. To be fair I was quite happy when James came through as I thought he can lead for a bit as none of us like leading in those condtiions, and you don’t want to be the first one to try it out,” said Hickman at the track.

“He did not do anything wrong at all and spat himself straight over the top and that made it worst and made me panic a bit more. I was a bit cautious, and the conditions changed throughout the race and the bike worked really well and a massive thanks to the team. We are after seventh in the championship and that [result] has helped us a lot.”

Team manager, Terry Rymer added to bikesportnews.com: “We love to see him win races and he has had a great year this year, and he will be a great rider for the roads. But not just the roads, he has proved he can cut it in BSB and not many roads guys who can do that - really pleased for him today.”
