Assen BSB: Dixon finds consistency with SC1 tyre

Jake Dixon has said that working with the Pirelli SC1 compound allowed he and the RAF Regular and Reserves Kawasaki team to find speed today in the Netherlands.

The current championship runner-up finished eighth in this morning’s session before moving up to third this afternoon, despite feeling a bit under the weather.

Dixon also admitted he may not be able to run the zero-compound tyre with the temperature drop, but believes he and the Lee Hardy Racing squad should be in a good position for the rest of the weekend with their setup on the SC1.

And the Dover native says if he can take some load off the front rubber, he should be in an ever stronger standing for the weekend ahead.

“We just stayed on the SC1 for the whole morning session and tried to find a setup,” Dixon told Bikesport News. “I wasn’t going to do anything stupid on a green track, so we just chipped away at it.

“Then we found a good lap time with the zero in FP2, but I can’t run it for the race because it’s too cold for us. But on the SC1 I’m fast.

“In FP2 we put the SC1 back in and I was doing really fast, low 37s I think for the whole session. We were within half a second from my best to my slowest, so I’m happy with how things went.

“I think we’re going to try a different front tyre in the morning, a harder one. I feel like I’m overloading the front tyre so I can’t turn as well as I want to. If we can get that sorted it’ll all be good.”

Dixon added that although his 2019 plans have been sorted with a Moto2 deal announced this week, he’s not changing his outlook for the final two rounds of BSB.

“I think I’m approaching like I’ve done all year, just chilled out and enjoying myself.

“That’s the main thing and I think that’s what you’ve got to do at the end of the day to be fast.”
