Assen BSB: Haslam overcomes fuelling issues to bag front row

JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam was quite surprised that he placed his ZX-10R on the front row for the opening MCE British Superbike race at Assen, even after a strong 1’36.348 lap during qualifying.

But the former World Superbike star was 0.03 seconds slower than his team-mate James Ellison, who just pipped him to the post on the timesheets. But neither were able to replicate the sub 1’36 pace of rival, Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne.

Haslam has found the race weekend ‘tough’ so far, and experienced issues with fuelling and engine problems going into the qualifying session. He will now sit down with his team to see if they can solve any remaining niggles with the Kawasaki, and the Smalley rider has every confidence that his crew can dispel the gremlins which currently lurk inside the ZX-10R.

“I can’t believe we have got a front row start. We have been having some big problems this weekend mainly on the fuelling and the engine shutting down mid corner and to go into qualifying with those issues I am actually over the moon with the front row. The chassis is working really well and we have a good race plan for tyres and set up wise, but we do need to solve these problems,”
said Haslam at the track.

“It has been a tough weekend. We have been at the sharp end but with a lot of complaints and moaning done by me, so to end up on the front row with still the few issues that we have got I am actually quite pleased about that.

“We need to sit down and solve for tomorrow, otherwise it is going to make it tough. But generally race set up and chassis wise and my feeling with my bike and the track I am happy with.

“This weekend we have these problems and it has been a bit of a new thing and we have tried a few things to solve it and it keeps re-occurring. We will sit down tonight with the boys and I am pretty confident they will get it all sorted for me.”
