Brands BSB: Byrne crashes but then goes fastest in opening session

Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne may of had a small off out on his Panigale during the opening MCE British Superbike free practice session, but it obviously did not faze him as he jumped back on his bike to go top of the timesheets, after a 1’25.518 at Brands Hatch.

The local rider was outside the top twenty with 30 minutes remaining and he crashed at Sheene Curve, but he got back onboard his Ducati and continued the session. But after a quick stop in the pits he came out and went fastest with just over five minutes left to FP1.

He was only one tenth under lap record pace and edged ahead of his team-mate, rookie Glenn Irwin this morning. The Northern Irishman was at the top of the timing-screens for a short time after a 1’25.908, but with a few minutes left out on the GP track, Honda Racing’s Dan Linfoot went 0.3 seconds faster to place his Fireblade P2.

At the end of the 45 minute outing it was Quattro Plant Kawasaki’s Luke Mossey who was fourth quickest with Buildbase BMW’s Richard Cooper completing the top five. At first it was Bennetts Suzuki’s Tommy Bridewell who headed the sheets, only to be pushed back down to sixth at the flag.

Jackson, O’Halloran, Iddon and Ellison rounded off the top ten. The Cumbrian was the leading JG Speedfit Kawasaki bike in FP1, with Haslam and Hickman finishing in P12 and P14 respectively.

ePayMe Yamaha’s newest recruit, Broc Parkes ended the morning in seventeenth, ahead of Tyco BMW’s Michael Laverty, John Hopkins and Kiyonari.

The opening session was red flagged after Team WD-40’s Jack Kennedy crashed at Stirlings. The Dubliner was taken to the medical centre for further assessment. Kennedy was later passed fit and will take part in FP2.
