Brands BSB: Fastest ever lap sees Byrne top final free practice

Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne smashed the outright lap record on his way to topping the final MCE British Superbike free practice timesheets with a super quick 1’24.838 at Brands Hatch.

The multiple-champ went three tenths under the fastest lap set by Josh Brookes back in 2011 and looks like the man to beat this weekend, after putting down the gauntlet to his fellow title rivals.

Hot on his tail was Honda Racing’s Jason O’Halloran. The Fireblade rider was unable to reach the 1’24’s but still lapped an impressive 1’25.218. He was still unable to out-pace Byrne who set his fastest lap on his seventeenth rotation with 90 seconds of the session to spare.

Quattro Plant Kawasaki’s Luke Mossey was up the sharp end for the majority of the outing and was 0.2 seconds off the time clocked by O’Halloran. Byrne’s rookie team-mate Glenn Irwin also impressed this morning in sunny conditions and went P4, with Buildbase BMW’s Richard Cooper completing the top five.

Bridewell, Buchan, Iddon,Smrz and Hickman rounded up the top ten. The JG Speedfit Kawasaki racer went quicker than both of his team-mate’s Haslam and Ellison in FP3, with the pair ending the session in thirteenth and fourteenth respectively.

Honda Racing’s Dan Linfoot did experience a crash out on track in the opening moments of the final timed practicde but he was able to ride his Fireblade back to the pits, and to get back out on the GP circuit to complete the outing in twelfth. Tyco BMW’s Michael Laverty went P15.
