Brands BSB: O'Halloran tops wet first practice

Honda Racing’s Jason O’Halloran topped the timesheets in this morning’s first Bennetts British Superbike free practice at Brands Hatch.

The Aussie shot to the top with his final lap of the Indy Circuit, beating RAF Regular & Reserves Kawasaki rider Jake Dixon while Glenn Irwin was third.

Light drizzle ahead of the session left the track wet but drying, as only 20 riders chose to go out.

It was Be Wiser Ducati’s Irwin who led for much of the session, as team-mate Shane Byrne was among the riders who opted to not even leave the pits.

As the session reached the half way point, Irwin was looking strong at the top as more riders began to emerge and the track temperature slowly began to rise.

The track was starting to dry by now, and with 15 minutes to run a few more riders, including JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam chose to come out, taking the total of riders on track to 19.

It seemed no-one was in any rush to topple Irwin, who was still sitting at the top having cut his best time to a 52.051.

Dixon went P1 very briefly as he became the first to dip into the 51s, but Irwin quickly followed suit and knocked almost a second off before leading the pack into the 50s, as he set a 50.640 with two minutes to run.

It looked like it could be enough to end the session on top, but O’Halloran – who had looked quick earlier on – saved his best until last as he clocked a 50.425sec lap as the flag fell.

Dixon was second quickest as Irwin was third, with Buildbase Suzuki’s Richard Cooper fourth ahead of the Movuno.com Halsall Racing Suzuki of Tommy Bridewell, while Honda Racing’s Dan Linfoot rounded out the top six.

Along with Byrne, the other riders who chose not to go out were Michael Laverty, James Ellison, Luke Mossey and Taylor Mackenzie.
