It will be a tense weekend for Ben Wilson, as he will have to pull out all the stops in an attempt to win the Henderson R1 Autumn Cup on Sunday in the final round of the championship at Brands Hatch.
There is just one poi9nt separating him from Jon Kirkham who holds the lead and the Boston rider knows he must beat Kirkham and ideally win the race to lift the trophy.
The 15-lap race is to be run on the short and demanding Indy circuit at Brands Hatch and with not many real passing opportunities, whoever gets the hole shot at the start is likely remain in front and take the win – and the trophy.
Whatever the result of the final race, Wilson is assured of the runner-up spot in both the main R1 Cup and the Autumn Cup as the third placed rider in each category is too far behind to make any difference. (Wilson has a 55-point advantage over Sam Warren in the main championship and is 48 points ahead of Adrian Coates in the Autumn Cup.)
“I have nothing to lose and everything to gain,” said Wilson. “I know what I have to do and will be giving it my best shot. The main championship is already decided but I have a good chance of winning the Autumn Cup. But I have to beat Jon so need to get a really good start and then remain at the front throughout the race.”
Wilson is also contesting the Metzeler National Superstock Championship final round. That championship is already decided with Steve Brogan being declared the champion at the last round.
But although Wilson is currently lying in seventh place in the standings there are only a handful of points separating him from third place and another good result could see him end his season within the top three or four.
