Donington BSB: Iddon tops wet first session as Haslam, Byrne, O'Halloran crash

Tyco BMW’s Christian Iddon was the fastest rider during a very wet opening MCE British Superbike free practice session at Donington Park.

There were a few fallers out on track including Showdown riders, JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam, Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne and Honda Racing’s Jason O’Halloran.

Byrne fell at Coppice, whereas O’Halloran had a tumble at McLeans, but both were declared OK at the trackside. Local lad Haslam crashed at Melbourne but got back on his ZX-10R.

Iddon lapped a 1’47.317 with JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s James Ellison the quickest of the title fighters in biblical conditions, after a 1’47.438 lap. Tommy Bridewell, Ryuichi Kiyonari and Alastair Seeley completed the top five.

Not every rider went out in FP1, but O’Halloran ended the morning in sixth with Byrne in eighth with Haslam rounding outthe top ten, with Smiths Racing’s Jakub Smrz in P9. Honda Racing’s Jenny Tinmouth ended the first free practice outing in eleventh.
