Donington BSB: Irwin - ‘I couldn’t give any more’

Honda’s Glenn Irwin dropped out of contention for this year’s Bennetts British Superbike Championship after a difficult weekend at Donington Park.

Still nursing an injured shoulder, Irwin suffered in conditions that would normally have suited him. Crashing out of Saturday’s race and scoring a brace of 10ths on Sunday.

Saturday’s crash put him on the back foot and he had to start the final race of the weekend from pit lane after suffering a problem with his quickshifter. He did well to work his way through to 10th but his title hopes have now gone.

“I felt good on Saturday even though the track was like ice and we struggled with edge grip,” he explained. “The crash was frustrating as I went into the corner slower than the lap before and there was no warning.

“Race two was fun but physically I was beat and couldn’t give any more. Losing the warm up lap and initial heat in the tyres wasn’t ideal but fair play to the team, they made a quick change and the bike was faultless.”
