Donington BSB: Chatter returns to haunt Laverty

McAMS Yamaha’s Michael Laverty suffered chatter issues with his R1 during the MCE British Superbike free practice sessions at Donington Park, but was able to make some positive changes to improve his time by nearly two seconds.

Even though his team worked hard on altering his bike to diminish the chatter, the Wales-based rider still found that the chatter reappeared once the tyre had been used for a few laps.

Laverty’s best time was a 1’30.499 and that placed him 13th on the FP2 time-sheets. His team will try some new ideas during the final free practice session tomorrow, with a possibility of focusing on weight distribution.

“FP1 was really difficult and there was a lot of chatter - the dreaded C word, and we thought we found the route of the problem when we came back from Cartagena but it was still there,” said Laverty, speaking to bikesportnews.com.

“In the second session we made some progress straight off and the bike felt better and we went fifth and into the 30’s and we went a second quicker by just eliminating a bit of the chatter, but it is still there and when the tyre went off the chatter got worse. Then we put a new tyre in at the end but I gone for the hard front and with the new tyre I am braking really gently with the bike and it doesn’t chatter but it is also slow.

“At the minute we can’t pin point what is wrong with it. Yamaha’s don’t generally chatter so there is something we are missing a little bit in the set-up and we have ideas we want to try tomorrow but it is a bit frustrating. The boys have a few ideas, maybe a weight distribution type of issue and once we solve that everything is good and its steers really good, but there is work to do.”
