Donington BSB: O'Halloran takes first pole of the year

Jason O’Halloran’s dominance of the opening Bennetts British Superbike Championship round at Donington Park continued this afternoon when he claimed a blistering pole position on the McAMS Yamaha, more than three quarters of a second inside the existing lap record.

The Australian posted a lap of 1’05.642s just ten minutes into the 25-minute session to go over half a second clear of the rest of the field and a whopping 0.772s inside Tommy Bridewell's lap record set last year. Although he was unable to improve on that, it was more than enough to ensure he’ll line up in the top spot for this afternoon’s 22-lap race.

The closest anyone got was Hector Barbera with a late time of 1’05.809s on the Rich Energy/OMG Racing BMW seeing him close to within 0.167s and push Kyle Ryde back to third. The Buildbase Suzuki rider was again impressive and was the last rider to dip into the 1’05s bracket with a lap of 1’05.945s.

Further back, Danny Buchan’s strong weekend continued as he took fourth spot on the Massingberd-Mundy Kawasaki to head up the second row where he’ll be joined by Honda Racing’s Glenn Irwin and Josh Brookes, the latter languishing outside the top ten for a considerable time before a late charge on the VisionTrack Ducati saw him move up to sixth.

Andrew Irwin, Tommy Bridewell, Luke Mossey and Joe Francis completed the top ten, despite the latter falling at the chicane with five minutes of the session remaining.

Peter Hickman was another rider to fall, coming to grief at Redgate on just his fifth lap which followed on from his spill in the morning at Coppice. He ended up in 14th place, one place behind another Redgate faller, Keith Farmer.
