Donington BSB test: Lowes tops the timesheets

Samsung Honda's Alex Lowes put in a last-gasp lap to top the timesheets at Donington Park's official MCE British Superbike test, edging out former champions Shane Byrne and Ryuichi Kiyonari.

Lowes' lap of 1'31.283 in second session was two-tenths faster than the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki man set in the morning with Kiyonari, also Samsung Honda-mounted, another three tenths further back on a track that was very cold for most of the day.

Brief snow flurries appeared over lunch but as the sun came out again, Lowes' final run of laps saw him bag overall top spot as Byrne elected not to go out for the final hour of the test.

Devizes swearbox Tommy Bridewell put his Bathams Honda in fourth place, just ahead of rookie Keith Farmer, while James Westmoreland had a good showing for sixth place despite wearing his nan's teacosy for a good portion of the day. He ended with with a 1'32.428.

Former World Superbike rider Jakub Smrz completed his test for the Padgett's Honda team in seventh place ahead of rising star Danny Buchan and Dane Robbin Harms on the Doodson Honda.

Milwaukee Yamaha's James Ellison had to contend with fuelling issues but managed to grab tenth place even though it was the first time he had ridden the bike. Aussie Team-mate Josh Waters who couldn't quite believe he had to ride in such cold temperatures, was two places behind with Chris Walker in the SMR sandwich.
