Donington BSB: Tough season opener for bookies' favourite Brookes

This weekend's opening Bennetts British Superbike Championship round at Donington Park was eventful for Josh Brookes with the VisionTrack Ducati rider in the thick of the action.

Having taken third place in Saturday’s season opener, the former champion looked on course to better that in at least one of Sunday’s encounters but mistakes in the first and then a coming together with Andrew Irwin in the second put paid to that and he left the Leicestershire circuit in sixth place in the table.

“What can I say? Despite the podium on Saturday, I wasn’t happy with the bike and couldn’t keep the pace of the Irwins so had to settle for third rather than risk a crash," said Brookes, speaking at the track.

"We made some changes to the bike overnight although they didn’t really make a lot of difference in Sunday’s first race and I ended up making some silly mistakes so I’ll take the blame for that one.”

The Bringelly resident made further changes to the Ducati Panigale V4R for the third and final race which appeared to have worked as he occupied second place from laps six to 23.

However, that’s when it all began to go wrong and after being pushed back to third at the chicane by Glenn Irwin, he then crashed out at high speed after Andrew Irwin touched him as he tried to overtake at the top of Hollywood.

“We changed the bike again for the third race and it definitely worked as we were competitive although if I had made a better start, I think I could have gone with Tommy. And then I encountered the situation with the Irwins.

“Glenn got past me fine but Andrew touched me as he went past and down I went. These things happen so we move on and hope for better results at Snetterton.”
