Kirkham makes shock switch to Tsingtao BSB team

Former Buildbase BMW rider John Kirkham has made a shock switch to the new Tsingao Racing team for next season's MCE British Superbike series after penning a two-year deal with the squad.

The lanky midlander who finished seventh last season and picked up the Superbike Cup trophy, felt it was time to try a new team in 2014 and after some negotiations with team boss Dave Tyson, he signed up for two years. He will be joined by Danny Buchan and Kyle Wilks in Superstock 1000, and Ben Godfrey on a Superstock 600.

"Dave Tyson called me and asked what I was doing next year and I saw what the Tsingtao team did with Howie (Mainwaring Smart) and I liked the idea of joining a new team and having my own crew chief who is great. Also I really liked the idea of being in a one bike team in BSB as I think it will work well for me,” said Kirkham, speaking to bikesportnews.com.

"I had my reasons to leave Buildbase BMW and now I'm happy to be part of the Tsingtao team. I am on a contract and it will be the first time that I will be riding a Kawasaki too. It's the only bike I have not had the chance to ride before so it should be fun.

"For 2014 my aim is to definitely get to the Showdown as I was so unfortunate not to make it this year and I missed out on zero points to my former team-mate James Westmoreland. But I did not have a consistent season as I cashed at Knockhill and had some poor results at other tracks too, so I want to make up for that next year.”
