Oulton BSB: Byrne quickest in opening session in mixed conditions

Be Wiser Ducati's Shane Byrne was the fastest rider during the first MCE British Superbike free practice session at Oulton Park, in mixed and cold weather conditions.

The first session of the day started off damp, but on the ten minute mark drops of rain fell in all sectors. When the wet weather descended on to the Cheshire track it was  multiple-champ Byrne who was the quickest on track with a 1'46.075, and no other rider was able to go any faster.

JG Speedfit Kawasaki's Leon Haslam was never really outside the top ten times during the 45 minute outing, and finished the morning second quickest, going eight tenths slower than Byrne, with a 1'46.897 rotation. Tyco BMW's Christian Iddon was P3 with JG Speedfit Kawasaki's James Ellison completing the top four with a time well inside the 1'47's, with a 1'47.621.

Bennetts Suzuki's Ryuichi Kiyonari  was also another rider to get inside the 1'47 bracket and ended FP1 fifth on the sheets, followed by the R1 of ePayMe Yamaha's John Hopkins.  Seeley, Irwin, Mainwaring and Laverty rounded up the top ten.

With 36 minutes remaining to the session the red flags appeared out on the side of the circuit as returning BSB racer, Michael Howarth crashed at Hill Top. He was subsequently sent to the medical centre for further assessment, and when  the lappery re-started it was Byrne who was at the top of the sheets.  Platform Hire Yamaha's Aaron Zanotti was another faller and crashed unhurt at Hizzy's.
