Silverstone BSB: Sunday plan in the works for Irwin

Glenn Irwin has revealed he has a strategy in mind for tomorrow’s two races in order to finally bag his first Bennetts British Superbike win of the year.

The Be Wiser Ducati rider, who lost out by just over a tenth of a second this afternoon after a late race battle with Leon Haslam, also believes he knows where his race went wrong today.

And despite feeling frustration at finishing second for the fifth time this season, Irwin feels he and the PBM squad have made big strides.

“It’s like watching Andrew last year, thinking, ‘why do you keep throwing the race away?’” he said.

“I need to improve my last laps. I felt I did good when I retook the lead with one to go and did a really good lap. But I think we’ve stepped up, so that one’s for the armchair critics.

“I didn’t miss a gear coming out of that new corner, but I had a not so good shift and thought Leon was going to be close enough to have a go. Then I just didn’t brake late enough.

“I could see there was grip but what I didn’t want to do was go into the last corner too hard and lose a podium. So fair play to Leon, he pulled that off the lap before and nearly lost the front, but we can take the fight to him tomorrow again.“

The Carrickfergus rider also says today was the first time this season he’s had a good rhythm at the front of the pack, but he knows where he needs to step up tomorrow.

“It’s the first time I felt comfortable leading a race. We were all using most of our tyres, but I think I know what I can do to perhaps do enough for tomorrow.

“It’s not a bad record, I’m content with that, but I want to be winning races so hopefully when one comes along we can take it because Leon’s winning every week.”
