Honda’s Glenn Irwin beat the Bennetts British Superbike lap record at Silverstone this afternoon while topping the overall timesheets.
The Irishman set a 53.139s which was ahead of the lap record was set by Jason O’Halloran last year and the pole record of 53.229s set in qualifying last year by Danny Buchan.
Irwin was chased hard by the diminutive McAMS Yamaha man Tarran Mackenzie who stuck in a 53.200 in the day’s third session to go second overall. Former Moto3 World Champion Danny Kent took his time from the second session to complete the top three.
OMG BMW'S Kyle Ryde topped the final session with a 53.323 which was enough for fourth place overall while yesterday's dominant force Jason O'Halloran finished in fifth and two-tenths off the pace.
Gino Rea took his Buildbase Suzuki to sixth with a 53.435 while Danny Buchan, making his BMW debut for the Synetiq team, ended the test seventh one place ahead of team-mate Andrew Irwin.
Christian Iddon was the first of the Ducati contingent in ninth with RAF Reserves Kawasaki's Ryan Vickers in tenth on a 53.553. Xavi Fores took his FHO BMW to 11th place with a 53.592.
Reigning champion Josh Brookes crashed in the final session of the day but only injured a finger. He ended in 12th with a 53.690 which was enough to keep Oxford Ducati's Tommy Bridewell at bay as the Devizes rider posted a 53.847 for 13th.
