SP125/RG Racing’s Rob Guiver made an unexpected return to the British paddock for the Relentless British 125GP this season and is really enjoying being back despite the usual unpredictable events of racing.
Guiver returns after two years after a friend’s 125cc was up for grabs after they decided to no longer race. From the start Guiver proved he still had what it takes to battle at the front. The season got off to pleasing start with Guiver finishing seventh in the first round at Brands Hatch. Oulton Park was even more exciting with him qualifying on the front row before finishing second in the race.
It was at Donington the demons of racing started to attack as Guiver suffered from engine problems and random parts suddenly deciding to fall off the bike. After qualifying just outside the top ten this was his first race of the season he did not finish after working his way up to fourth before having to retire due to problems.
At Thruxton things looked to have picked up with him having a really good practice, qualifying tenth and running in fourth in the race, but intermittent bike problems again pushed him back down to the order giving him all the work to do again. Stopped by a red flag Guiver had to settle for seventh overall, a result he repeated at Snetterton this weekend.
Guiver said: “Its been an interesting season at first there was the fuel that we were using that made the engine burn too hot, blowing it up basically. Now we have the new fuel, first impressions is that it is better, but it’s still not like what we used to use in previous years.”
“Also now we’ve spent more money than planned with replacing parts that were damaged. We’ve also had other issues but I am really enjoying racing and being back. Before I used to really push myself and aim for that win, but now I am just enjoying it and see what happens.”
Guiver took time out of racing after taking part in the Superstock championship in which he finished third, but he was crippled fund wise with cost of the championship. Now back on a 125cc going into this round Guiver was fifth in the standings. Due to the never ending issues he has now slipped to seventh but still only six points behind fourth place. Bring on Knockhill.
