Snetterton BSB: Lowes overcomes ‘terrible start’ to grab a podium finish

Samsung Honda’s Alex Lowes had his most successful MCE British Superbike weekend of the year so far at Snetterton. The youngster stormed to victory in race one, and was fortunate to overcome a poor start to fight his way up to second in the final race of the day.

Lowes is now back up to second in the championship standings, and is 32 points behind leader Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne, but the 22-year-old is happy that he managed to push himself through the grid, after ending up as low down as eighth on the opening lap in race two.

“I really enjoyed that, but I would have liked to have won. I had a pretty terrible start from pole position and I think I was eighth on turn one and passed two or three people on the first lap and then I was fifth and then I was fourth, but soon as the safety car went in I overtook James Ellison,” said Lowes, speaking at the circuit.

“I felt quite good sat behind Shakey and Josh and the pace was a bit slower, but I knew what Shakey was doing and that he would be faster at the end. I almost felt like I wanted to get past him and push him at then end, but never got quite close enough to work a pass. But I learnt a lot from those fast five laps.”

The Lincolnshire lad vows to improve even more for the next round at Brands Hatch, and found it impossible today to out-pace Byrne this afternoon.

“I gave it 100 percent but he did not make any mistakes in those last two laps, and to pass him it would be silly to try, and hopefully we can upset him a bit at his home race at Brands. This is my most successful weekend of the year, and I am looking forward to the next one.”
